Niles Switching To Direct Billing For Garbage Collection Services

Image

The Village of Niles has gone to Direct Billing for it's residents garbage and refuse service needs.

The first bills will be arriving in the first few days of May, according to literature sent by the Village, as well as the Niles Director of Communication.

According to the mailer that was sent to Niles residents, their households will now be receiving a bill directly from Groot 4 times per year, expected to average $50 per pay period.

One of the reasons given for the switch was for fairness, as some homes would pay too little and other pay too much for the amount of garbage Groot would take. Previously the garbage bill would be 'rolled into' the general tax bill, and that also contributed to a lack of 'transparency'.

Pressed to know if the garbage bills that were 'rolled into' the general tax bill would mean a refund might be forthcoming could not be answered but a promise was made to get back to me on that. Additionally the 'transparency' quote was addressed asking if the bills of homeowners would be a matter of public record, and the Director was unsure but further offered to get back with that answer.
