Niles Resident Gizelle Chavez was killed early Saturday morning after a speeding tow truck rammed the SUV she was in, causing it to crash into a wall, ejecting the SUVs occupants.
The events leading up to the crash began around 2:13 a.m. in the 600 block of West Roosevelt on Saturday morning.
Giselle Chávez, who was 21, her sister, Alexandra, who lives in Melrose Park, and a 19-year-old man were all ejected from their Chevy Tahoe after a tow truck slammed into the back of their vehicle, sending it into a wall.
According to CPD reports, Chávez was behind a red pickup truck outfitted with a tow conversion kit when the truck rear-ended another vehicle, one report said. As the first car took off, heading east on Roosevelt, the tow truck backed into Chávez’s Tahoe, a CPD officer reported, citing video evidence.
About a minute later, Chávez was in front of the tow truck as the vehicles entered the 100 block of West Roosevelt, a second report stated. Again citing video evidence, an officer said the truck rear-ended Chávez’s Tahoe, causing the Tahoe to swerve and strike a utility pole and the side of a building at 150 West Roosevelt.
The tow truck driver sped away from the scene, leaving Chávez and her two passengers lying on the ground. No word on if the passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time and no word on the truck driver who sped away.
