In a breaking development of a National story out of Chicago, 25-year-old Adrian Rucker of Freeport, a town west of Rockford, is scheduled to appear in court Sunday afternoon on several felonies.
Charges against Rucker include armed violence, illegal gun possession and illegal drug possession.
The incident occurred at around 9:50 p.m. Thursday while Rivera and the Gresham (6th) District tactical team tried to conduct an investigatory stop on a person believed to have a weapon. Her death was later ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Officer Rivera was shot in the back after the tactical team went to an address where Rucker apparently pointed a weapon at responding officers. An officer fired one shot that struck Rivera in the back and she later died at the hospital, less than one hour after being shot.
The charges against Rucker are as follows:
One felony count – Armed Violence / Category 1
One felony count – Firearm/FOID Invalid/ Not Elig
One felony count – ID Card – Possess Fraudulent ID Card
One felony count – PCS – Possession – Poss Amt Con Sub Except (A)(D)
Six counts – Issuances of Warrant
Rucker is being held without bail pending his next court date, which has not been released as of yet.
Officer Rivera was a 4-year veteran of the force and leaves behind a 4-year-old child.
