A Des Plaines woman identified as Giovanna Rodriguez-Fuentes, 28,
of the 600 block of Colonial Lane, was allegedly inebriated when her Toyota Prius
hit the back of a slow-moving semitrailer truck shortly before midnight
June 1, on Algonquin Road near Leslie Lane, according to Des Plaines police.

Her passenger, identified as her aunt, Nazly Rodriguez-Munoz died early the next morning at the hospital as a result of her injuries. Nazly-Rodriguez was bleeding heavily from her leg when police arrived on the scene and applied a tourniquet. She was then transported to a local area hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Des Plaines police said forensic evidence showed that Rodriguez-Fuentes was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. She was charged with DUI on June 3 while in the hospital, then release from the hospital and subsequently turned over to Cook County sheriff’s police on Thursday, June 5.

No word on the specific forensic evidence found, but it is routine to have blood drawn at a hospital where a serious crash has taken place and police suspect drugs or alcohol are involved.

The crash happened near Friendship Park in Mount Prospect, where this reporter went to the actual scene the very next day but there is little if any evidence of a crash having taken place there.

The next court date on the matter is set for June 11.
