Former IL House Speaker Michael Madigan is to be sentenced Friday for his conviction on 10 of 23 counts in a remarkable corruption trial that lasted four months.
Madigan was convicted on charges of federal bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud tied to a scheme to push legislation in exchange for jobs and contracts for his associates.
Madigan, also a private practicing attorney, was able to build a personal wealth in excess of 40 Million during his career as well.
Federal prosecutors are seeking a 12.5 year term, while his defense team is seeking probation, arguing that at age 83, a long sentence would be the equivalent of a life sentence.
Madigan will appear in U.S. District Court Friday in Chicago, where Judge John Robert Blakey will determine his sentence.
