According to Highland Park officials, HPPD officers conducted a well-being check of a man in the roadway in the 900 block of Half Day Road just before 5 a.m.
A 9-1-1 call reported a person lying in the middle of the road who then stumbled into a nearby home.
According to officials, officers went to the address in question where they found a 59-year-old man, who they said abruptly exited the home with a knife. Police said the man "quickly charged at officers with a knife," prompting officers to fire shots.
Police said they gave the man multiple instructions to drop the knife.
The Highland Park Fire Department arrived minutes later and tried to help stabilize the man. Officials said life-saving measures were not successful, and the man died on the scene.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is conducting an independent investigation.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released to the media.
