Mexican Independence Day Celebrations Have Begun in Chicago.
Michigan avenue in downtown Chicago was the scene of dozens of
Mexican flag waving vehicles and traditional Mexican trumpet music
playing as local residents of Mexican descent celebrated Mexican
Independence day, which was declared on Sept. 16, 1810 when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued the “grito,” or call for an end to Spanish rule to those who had gathered in the “zocalo,” or central plaza in Mexico City.
