The building at 5444 N Cumberland Ave Chicago, IL, which currently houses the LA Fitness health club has been bought by new owners and the gym will be closing September 27 as ComEd will be remodeling and turning the location into their new corporate headquarters, starting in 2023.
An era has ended, as all Chicago Health Club / Bally's Total Fitness clubs will now be permanently shuttered.
The gym members have been directed to go to the LA Fitness at the Foster Avenue location.
The health club originally opened as a Chicago Health Club in 1991, with Heather Locklear being a celebrity who was on hand during the opening ceremonies.
LA Fitness took over Bally's approx 8 years ago and has been continuously closing the Bally's locations so the brand only consists of cookie-cutter corporate LA Fitness gyms, as the Bally's format did not fit in with LA's corporate branding image campaign.
This reporter has been going to the Norwood Park location since it opened in 1991 and it is the last LA Fitness gym to have a running track, all other locations merely have treadmills.
