Chicago's police oversight agency releases videos of deadly officer-involved shooting in which 26-year-old Dexter Reed was fired upon by CPD with up to 96 shots into his vehicle during a traffic stop on March 21, 2024.

The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. on March 21 at the intersection of North Avers Avenue and West Ferdinand Street. Plain-clothed Chicago police attempted to pull over a vehicle and the man inside allegedly shot at officers, prompting them to return fire, according to CPD.

One officer was shot in the left wrist and transported to a local hospital for treatment. No word on if he was shot by the deceased or other CPD gunfire.

It is not clear whether the deceased, Me. Reed knew the individuals surrounding his vehicle were in fact under-cover CPD or potential carjackers, nor is it entirely clear if in fact Mr. Reed actually fired upon CPD.

There was apparently no chain of command that dictates who is in charge of firing, stopping firing or how many shots fired are necessary when dealing with one lone individual vs. an army of potential offenders.

In response to the release of the videos, several organizations plan to protest at CPD's 11th district at 6 p.m Tuesday.
